Appalousa Acres Calves

Cattle

Welcome to Appalousa Acres, in Opelousas, Louisiana.  Our farm is home to a growing herd of ADCA-registered Dexter cattle in a peaceful, pasture-based setting. Dexter cattle are well known for their versatility, docile temperaments, and hardiness—traits that make them especially well suited to small farms and homesteads.

Our Foundation

We maintain a carefully selected group of cattle that reflects our commitment to sound genetics and responsible breeding practices.

  • Bull: GPF Southern Integrity – A homozygous polled Dexter bull known for his calm disposition, solid conformation, and consistent, high-quality offspring.
  • JB Licorice – A black, polled Dexter cow with a strong maternal line and a dependable calving history.
  • JW's Rose Anna – A black, polled cow known for her even temperament and solid frame.
  • T&M's June Bug – A black, horned Dexter cow with excellent mothering instincts and natural grazing ability.

All of our animals are registered with the American Dexter Cattle Association (ADCA).

How We Raise Our Cattle

At Appalousa Acres, we believe healthy cattle start with healthy pastures. Our Dexter cattle are:

  • Grass-fed, grazing freely during the growing season.
  • Supplemented with quality hay during the winter months.
  • Provided with free-choice protein tubs year-round for balanced nutrition.

This natural approach helps ensure our herd remains hardy, efficient, and low-maintenance—ideal for small-acreage farms and regenerative grazing systems.

Why Choose Dexter Cattle for Your Homestead?

Dexter cattle are one of the smallest and most versatile heritage breeds in North America. They offer a unique combination of traits that make them a favorite among homesteaders, hobby farmers, and sustainable agriculture enthusiasts:

  • Dual-purpose breed – Ideal for both milk and grass-fed beef production.
  • 📊 Compact and efficient – Most adults weigh between 700 and 1,000 lbs, making them easier to handle and more economical to feed.
  • 🌾 Low acreage requirements – A great choice for farms with limited grazing space.
  • Docile and intelligent – Dexter cattle are known for their manageable behavior and adaptability to new owners.
  • 🦵 Hardy and low-maintenance – They thrive in a wide range of climates and are well suited for rotational grazing.

Whether you're looking to add a milk cow to your homestead, raise your own beef, or build a foundation Dexter herd, we believe you'll find the right fit here at Appalousa Acres.
